Heart4Roatan

About our Mission

The goal of this Heart4Roatan site is to provide people who desire to help the less fortunate people of Roatan find the charities that they can support. There is so much need on the island: food, clothing, education, health and medical supplies, and environmental efforts. There IS something for everyone and so many ways to help, BUT people just do not know where to start. Heart4Roatan is the portal that will point them in the direction where they can have the most impact. While visiting the island please engage to put your heart into action and also support the many local businesses to help the overall economic health.

Our Story

Like many people, ten years ago I had never heard of Roatan and found it as a port of call on a cruise ship. My wife and I has been researching Caribbean locations for our long-term retirement plans and we fell in love with this beautiful island off the coast of Honduras. We have traveled yearly since then learning more about the island and getting to know the real Roatan- the one you only get a slight glimpse of when you stop for a cruise day. We love the island and its people and seeing the lives that many of these people live caused us to want to help. We contribute to faith-based community outreaches and decided to launch this site to have a much greater impact for good. We are committed to the island and its people as we are landowners and will be building our retirement home and working towards residency status in the years to come.

About Roatan

Roatan is part of a cluster of island archipelagos situated ten to forty miles off the northern coast of Honduras. Roatan is located in between Utila and Guanaja Islands. These islands are a gem in the western Caribbean, and they are surrounded by the largest barrier reef system in the northern hemisphere. The Mesoamerican Barrier Reef is only second in size to Australia’s Great Barrier Reef.

Roatan’s call to fame is its coral reef. The Mesoamerican Barrier Reef is world-renowned. It is the largest of its kind in the northern hemisphere and second largest worldwide. Only the Great Barrier Reef is larger in scope and size that is the reef in the waters around Roatan Island. The Mesoamerican Reef System extends from the Yucatan Peninsula in southern Mexico, down past the Bay Islands of Honduras. The reef system around Roatan has all three types of coral reefs and in it live countless marine creatures as it is comprised of many marine ecosystems. The waters around Roatan are a combination of open water and sheltered water. This makes Roatan perfect for Scuba Diving and also many other water sports.

Roatan is 40 miles long and at its widest its only 5 miles wide. It’s a long and narrow island. Roatan’s highest point is 900 ft above sea level. Roatan has an east-west orientation, and its northern and southern coastlines are both visible from several points on the island.
